Sunday Class Descriptions

Session 1 (11am-12:30pm)

All-Instructors Class is UPSTAIRS

  • Leading and Following Philosophies with Anna Washenko, Clyde Wright, Laura Chieko, Krystal and Adam Wilkerson

  • Leading and following can be described in many different ways, and mean different things to different people.  Leaders can be “open” or “specific,” followers can be “additive” or “pure.”  Join us for an intensive exploration of five different perspectives on leading and following to learn what we enjoy and the underlying philosophies that govern why we dance the way we do.

Session 2 (1:45pm-3pm)

UPSTAIRS AT 2720

  • The Strut with Laura Chieko and Adam Wilkerson

  • Originally from New Orleans, the strut is a dreamy ballroomin' blues dance that spread up the Mississippi river to cities such as Chicago by the 1940s. Join Adam and Laura to travel across the floor in style using this elegant blues idiom dance!  Students should have some familiarity with close embrace for this class.

DOWNSTAIRS AT 2720

  • Struttin' Candy: Fancy Feet with Krystal Wilkerson and Clyde Wright

  • Struttin' is a high-tempo close-embrace blues Idiom dance from Memphis. Come refine your basics during this class then expand your vocabulary of footwook variations for this fun and energetic dance!

FOAM (3359 S Jefferson Ave, St. Louis, MO 63118)

  • DJ/Music Open Forum Discussion with Anna Washenko

  • Where can you find great blues music? How do you prepare for a set? What's the deal with all this idiom stuff? You've got questions, Anna has answers (or at least funny stories). Whatever your background, experience level, or role in the scene, if you're at all interested in DJing, come talk shop.

Session 3 (3pm-4:15pm)

UPSTAIRS AT 2720

  • No Fear Solo Dancing with Anna Washenko

  • It can be intimidating to step out on the dance floor by yourself. But solo dancing is great! It offers a chance for complete individual expression, it’s a great practice tool, and it really does make your partnering better. This class will give you both the moves and the mindset you need to feel like a badass when you dance on your own.

DOWNSTAIRS AT 2720

  • Steal Dancing with Clyde Wright, and Adam and Krystal Wilkerson

  • From steal jams to riffing with your friends, steal dancing is fun for everyone involved! In this class, we'll explore fun and challenging techniques for "cutting in." We'll look at stealing within the framework of a variety of music styles, and talk a little about the context of stealing, along with timing and comfort for all involved. Come jam with us!

FOAM (3359 S Jefferson Ave, St. Louis, MO 63118)

  • Curriculum Development Discussion with Laura Chieko

  • Curriculum development is the art of designing a series of linked classes.  Developing and implementing a progressive curriculum can help your students steadily grow over time and identify common themes within dance.  This requires a careful evaluation of your goals, limitations, and resources.  Join Laura for an interactive lecture exploring the thought process behind creating a dance curriculum and learn about the specific decisions that have worked well in her home scene!
